ocean, and every living thing is connected with
the blue heart of our
planet.
Misión Tiburón strongly believes that in order to sustain our ocean’s critical balance, human actions such as pollution, habitat degradation and overfishing need to be contained, for future human generations and a healthier planet for all living things. There is only one ocean, and every living thing is connected with the blue heart of our planet.

Ocean Habitats Science has proven that oceans produce over half of the oxygen we breathe, trap excess CO2 from the atmosphere and regulate global climate. Ocean Habitats Its coastal areas provide much-needed protection from extreme weather events such as hurricanes and tsunamis. Ocean Habitats As a food source, oceans sustain more than 3 billion people worldwide. Ocean Habitats At a more spiritual level, oceans are seen by humans as symbols of beauty, peace, freedom and happiness and have been revered from the beginning of our history. The ocean provides countless opportunities for humankind. Why Protect the

Ocean Habitats For the Blue Planet The Earth is a blue planet and Costa Rica, with a marine Exclusive Economic Zone 12 times bigger than its land, is a blue country, home to a staggering 3.5% of the world's incredible biodiversity. Despite this remarkable statistic, most marine species in Costa Rica are not protected and are actually threatened. Our natural marine resources have been degraded due to poor management and lack of conservation strategies as well as an increase in pollution and habitat loss. Ocean Habitats For Coastal Communities and Fishermen The well-being of our coastal communities is based on the health of marine ecosystems. Because of this, we promote the protection of threatened marine species and their essential habitats, as well as the fostering of a blue economy in coastal communities, which promotes a circular and responsible use of marine resources. ©David García Ocean Habitats For a Healthy Planet The ocean is the world's largest carbon reservoir, and by producing more than half of the oxygen we breathe, it is effectively the lungs of our planet. Many don’t realise that the state of the ocean’s biodiversity is connected to everything that happens on our land. So the health of our ocean is essential to the well-being of our planet. If we don't stop further degradation, we will face terrible consequences which will affect us all, with those living along the coastline being affected first. ©Charles Pettit navigate_before navigate_next

Slide ©Enrique Uribe Why are Sharks in Danger?

Slide Learn the problems they are faced with and see how we are taking actions to protect this endangered specie. Why Are Sharks in Danger? Learn the problems sharks are faced with and see how we are taking action
to protect these endangered species.
Today we have around 400 different shark species.
They have evolved 400 million years ago, to adapt successfully to aquatic environments, being the top predators of the ecosystems. Alterations in their populations status directly affect the structure and function of other species.
Sharks’ population is in decline around the world, with an estimated 100 million sharks being killed annually, most of them victims of bycatch.

Slide Overfishing is the biggest threat sharks currently face. Commercial fisheries are the main cause for sharks’ population decline around
the world.

Recent reports of the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) reveal that a third of all sharks are threatened with extinction.

Slide Saving sharks needs more than just research. For this reason Misión Tiburón works together with dedicated partners to give a voice to the sharks.

We also educate coastal communities and fishermen about the importance of sharks in our ocean.

Overfishing What Are We Doing?

Slide Sharks depend on different aquatic ecosystems to complete their life cycle and to maintain the health of their populations.

Pollution, ecosystem destruction and climate change are the main causes of habitat degradation that have impacted on sharks’ growth, feeding and reproduction.

Slide Just like people, all other animals need homes. Here at Misión Tiburón we try to combat habitat loss by protecting the mangroves where sharks live and feed.

With the help of a great number of our dedicated supporters, we carry out regular beach and seafloor clean-ups around coastal areas.

Habitat Degradation What Are We Doing?

Slide To maintain a balanced ocean and marine ecosystems within their natural carrying capacity, sharks evolved traits such as slow growth, low reproductive rate, late maturity and low natural mortality rate.

These biological characteristics, unfortunately, make sharks particularly vulnerable to overfishing.

Slide In 2018, with governmental help, the first Shark Sanctuary in Costa Rica was declared, based on the data collected by Misión Tiburón team.

The Sanctuary protection will help prevent the capture and commercialization of pups and juveniles of the critically endangered scalloped hammerhead shark.
